This summer, Christ the King Church presents a summer recital series on Sunday afternoons. Summer Music at Christ the King features performances by three talented young musicians, over these three Sundays: June 28, July 12, and August 2. Recitals will take place in the church at 3pm. There is no cost to attend.
On June 28, virtuoso pianist Gabriel Landstedt will present Transcendental, a program that features some of the most physically and spiritually transcendent pieces in classical music, including selections from Liszt's Transcendental Etudes, Rachmaninoff's powerful 2nd piano sonata, Scriabin's mystical 7th piano sonata, and Beethoven's monumental final Sonata in C minor, Op. 111. Landstedt has performed all over the world, including in the USA, Canada, Singapore, Sweden, Germany, and Italy, and is the winner of numerous competition prizes. He is currently on faculty at both the Thames Valley Music School and the Community Music School.

On August 2, flutist Ava Gilbert will present a program of music for flute, accompanied by pianist Samuel Oram.
Gilbert is a classical flutist from Old Lyme, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Currently pursuing a bachelor of music in flute performance at the University of Michigan, she studies under the tutelage of Professor Amy Porter. She is a recent Interlochen Arts Academy alum, where she completed her studies under Ms. Nancy Stagnitta and Mr. Anthony Trionfo.
An active performer, Ava was recently seen in University of Michigan’s production of Bizet’s Carmen, as well as Interlochen Arts Academy’s productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty ballets. Ava is a member of The Sterling Winds, a wind quintet based out of Ann Arbor, who recently performed in New York City with Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival. Ava has performed in numerous masterclasses with mentors such as Sharon Sparrow, Hannah Hammel Maser, Jim Walker, and Brandon Patrick George.
Beyond the stage, Ava looks forward to serving as flute mentor with the Michigan Youth Ensembles and fulfilling her minor in German language studies.
In observance of the nation’s 250th birthday — as well as the 200th birthday of American composer Stephen Foster — tenor Cooper Kendall will present Summer at Home, a program of quintessential American music, on July 12. Kendall is an Old Lyme native and a longtime parishioner of Christ the King Church. He has studied extensively, earning a bachelor’s degree at the New England Conservatory, a master’s degree in vocal performance at Mannes College of Music (NYC), and a specialized master’s degree in lied interpretation at the Musik-Akademie Basel (Switzerland), where he received the prize for best master’s thesis project. He continues to study and perform in Europe. Appearing with Kendall will be acclaimed Russian pianist Semyon Berezin.
